THE ULTIMATE QUESTION of a film photographer… Noritsu or Frontier?
Ya’ll, I have spent an embarrassing amount of time and money going back and forth between the two, trying to find one that I liked more… Well… I think I’ve decided on one. Or have I?
The previous images were initially scanned on the Noritsu scanner by Richard Photo Lab
Noritsu on the left, Frontier on the right – both unedited straight from the lab.
The Noritsu is fast – has a very fast turnaround, in fact, usually RPL gets them done as soon as 24 hours. That’s incredible for an impatient person like me! Frontier takes a longer time as it’s a slower machine. There is more of a wait, but I think I like it more…
For the Noritsu, I find that there is a dull, blueish grayish tone to the image and I prefer a bit more warmth and contrast. I always edit them in Lightroom later on, so it’s not hard to make the change – but part of the beauty of film is not having to edit (as much) so this is just another step for me. As I look at the images side by side, I can pick out likes and dislikes for both of them.. I like the pinks and oranges better on the noritsu.. but I like the blues, the contrast and warmth of the frontier. Decisions, decisions!
